W&R Carlton Ware Cretonne Pattern
 "Pattern attributed to Enoch Boulton"

Cretonne is an unusual pattern, with its yellow Temple border it harks of the Chinoiserie. It is my belief that the bird that appears on this pattern in two forms is a representation of an Asiatic Pheasant.

The name in itself is not Chinese, it is a noun of French origin dating back to 1870. Cretonne is a style of cotton fabric used in furniture upholstery and drapery. The fabric is similar to chintz, but with a dull finish.  The name stems from the Normandy village of Creton where the fabric was originally manufactured.
