Presented here for consideration is a large and prestigous Royal Doulton Don Quixote Becket shaped pitcher. Don Quixote is one of rarer of Royal Doulton Subjects from Literary series. It commemorates the sixtieth century tome by Miguel de Cervantes. This series was introduced in 1906 and with drawn in 1928. The series consist of 19 scnes. This is scene 3: “The fight with Giants”. The scene depicts the crazed Don Quixote de la Mancha having a fair tilt at an innocuous Windmill. The pattern number D2678 written on the base in maroon ink, this is the first pattern number set against this series. It also has a black stamped makers mark of the style that was in use from 1902 until 1932, this mark incorporates British Registration Number 466627 – this dates the registration of this pattern to 1905. While it is impossible to date this piece to an exact year, I would hazard a guess to some where between 1906 and 1910. Dimensions This large and very impressive jug stands a proud 23.2 cm (9.25”) tall and it measures 18 cm (7.12”) across the top from the edge of the outer edge of the handle to the lip of the spout.
Condition It is in USED condition with no chips or cracks. It is crazed and the inside is stained. There is what I believe must be a firing crack running length ways down the handle, this is only visible on the jug side of the handle so it is very hard to see, it is not on the exposed side of the handle. (see the close up photos below). This is an early series. It is not that common for examples of this series to come up.
