It is a privilege to present a striking Carlton Ware Moonlight Cameo Teapot. It is hand decorated under the glaze; the decorative cartouche depicts two nymphs in silhouetted in the moon light, one nymph is taking delight in the bubbles that the second nymph is blowing from a long pipe. This pair vibrant ice blue lustre cartouches are set against a vibrant sponged orange lustre ground. These decorative cartouches work so very well against the striking orange ground. The rip of the teapot decorated with a black strip with delicate gold filigree applied over the top.
It has the back stamped Carlton Ware maker’s mark of the style that was introduced in 1927. This pattern number was introduced into service in circa 1924, this is one of the only examples I have ever seen with a Carlton Ware mark, most have a W&R mark. I would hazard a guess that this impressive teapot was produced during the transition period from the W&R mark to the Carlton Ware mark, so 1927 It bold teapot measured 19 cm (7.75”) from the outer edge of the handle to the lip of the spout and it stands 10 cm (4”) tall. It is in EXCELLENT condition; there are no chips, cracks, stains or repairs. There is just a HINT of crazing to the white of the base and the inside only. There is just the merest suggestion of wear to gilding to the finial of the knob of the handle and to the very top edge of the handle and I am not exaggerating when I say suggestion either. This piece is almost exactly the same as it was when it came out of the factory 85 years ago. It has obviously only ever know the sheltered existence of a cabinet dweller. Moonlight Cameo is a very rare and sort after pattern. These are always hard to find and are keenly contested. This is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive piece I have ever seen in this magical pattern.
