Royal Doulton John Peel Hunting Vase (shape 7349)
Newly Discovered Scene
Royal Doulton John Peel Hunting
Royal Doulton introduced the John Peel Hunting series in 1924 and to date I have never seen an example produced after WWII. It is the standard Royal Doulton series ware production techniques, print and tint. That is printed with the application pf a polychrome transfer and tint applied by air brush.

R.D. John Peel Hunting Bone China Tea Pot; H2620
There are 4 pattern numbers attributed to Earthen Ware and only 3 attributed to Bone China, it is much more common to find this pattern on a bone china ground. John Peel was produced on three colour-ways. The most common is the yellow ground, the scarcer back grounds are white (Snow Ground) and the green (Blue Sky Ground). I have only ever seen Snow and Blue Sky grounds on Bone China.

There is also a hand painted variation of this pattern. It is pattern number H3636. This number was introduced into service in 1928. To date I have only ever seen two examples of the hand painted version of this pattern. This plate is clearly signed to the bottom left of the scene; J. Pirce.

Six other pattern numbers issued against this series, four are Earthen Ware:-
D4340 introduced 1923
D4892 " " 1928
D4893 " " 1928
D6231 " " 1941
Two pattern numbers issued for Bone China:-
H2620 introduced 1925
H2866 " " 1926

The pattern number E3804 is listed against Coaching Days, but there are many bone china items decorated with scenes from the John Peel Hunting series that have this number. While I cannot explain why; it appears that pattern number E3804 was used for both John Peel and Coaching Days.

Many of the items in this series come with 2 scenes on them. The plate finished in the yellow (2 above) is decorated with scene 9 & 10. The Blue Sky example (directly above) is decorated with scenes 2 & 3. The Snow Ground plate below comes with scenes 4 & 5.

The two plates below were both manufactured in 1924. They are identical in size and pattern number and they are both decorated with the same scene. However the bottom plate has a pair of hounds where the other plate has a solitary dog. I believe that the dogs where applied at the artists discretion.

In volume 2 of “Royal Doulton Series Ware” Louise Irvine names the first nine scenes in this series. On page 55 of the New Discovery Volume (volume 5) Mz Irvine shows a tenth scene which is also used in the Quorn Hunt series. This is scene 10; Hunters jumping a fence. Mary of Majorie Jomes Memorial Collection and I have identified five extra scenes so these are numbered 11 through to 15.
Fox Mottos on left; John Peel on Right
Scene 3 of John Peel Hunting is incorpoated into Fox Mottos series D3567. Fox Mottos was introduced in 1912 and in the very ealiest veriations John Peel dates to 1923, however the colour-ways are quite destictive.
