A Royal Doulton Fox Hunting Musical Cigarette Box (shape number 8293) - dated 1940 It is hand signed by the artist S.Hall and it plays The "Country Gardens" suite by Grainger There are four series numbers issued against this series: D.5104 introduced circa 1931 D.5879 introduced circa 1938 D.5882 introduced circa 1938 D.5948 introduced circa 1938 Attached below are 4 variations of maker’s marks used in conjunction with this series. The first is the mark that was used from c.1931 until circa 1942. The second is an example of the mark with a date code; the 11 just to the left of the crown denotes that this piece was produced in 1938. The base year is 1927, you then add the numeral beside the crown to 1927 and this gives you a year of production. The third was used from c.1942 until the series was discontinued in 1950 (the “A” just to the left of the makers’ mark was introduced in 1942 and it is to do with war time restrictions on production). The third is the bone china mark, to date I have not seen this mark with an A mark. Often this pattern appears with a date code impressed into the base. The pattern name and number are added at a later date to the Royal Doulton maker’s mark. As this series was in production for nearly 20 years there are slight variations in the colour. This series was issued on earthen ware and bone china. I do not have the pattern numbers for the bone china. On page 109 of volume 2 of Royal Doulton Series Ware Louise Irvine lists the 6 known scenes in the Fox Hunting series. The scenes are: 1. The hunt meeting a donkey cart 2. Dismounted huntsman under the hedge.
3. Huntsman in a duck pond
4. The hunt startling a ploughman and his horses
5. The hunt chasing the fox
6. Huntsman caught in a tree
