Close up of W&R Carlton Ware Mikado Bowl - pattern

Over the last few days I have been looking at the various pattern numbers for the Mikado pattern. After the release of the Kosniowski’s latest tome “Carlton Ware, The Complete Guide”; I have decided to review my own work. Now in the “The Complete Guide” 36 numbers have been attributed to the Mikado pattern. Now after reviewing my own files I have come up with a list of 18 patterns; with another colour-way without a number.

W&R Carlton Ware Blush Ware Christmas Cactus PDF Print E-mail

 Image

Originally, when I was building my W&R Blush Ware fact files, I could not find a name for this pattern so I called it Daffodils as that is what the flowers reminded me of. But Harvey at Carlton Ware World has pointed out that this pattern has been known for some time as Christmas Cactus. After some consideration I have decided to go with this name as the image resembles Christmas Cactus more than it does Daffodils.

I have received this enquiry from Sue Ellery (eBay seller elestegen )

Royal Doulton Ships C Mafair Toilet Set

 Hi Bruce

I am contacting you as an online authority whose helpful and comprehensive website I refer to most often when researching Doulton Seriesware - I am no expert myself, and only occasionally manage to find a Doulton Seriesware piece to sell on ebay.

I have recently been asked to sell a beautiful Doulton washstand set for a friend, in a pattern I have never seen before and can find nowhere else. I am not sure if it is Seriesware, as I do not own the relevant reference books - but looks as though it ought to be. The pieces in the four piece set (which are almost perfect and I would say, museum quality) all bear the pattern number D2243 (or D2273?), which I believe dates the design to 1905. It is a most dramatic boating scene, with a lugger (I think) in the foreground with 4 crew, and other more distant boats to the sides. It is a night-time scene, with the moon at full, and the sea looks decidedly choppy and  squally, with dark threatening storm clouds looming overhead. The colours of the sea scene are petrel blue, darkest teal and indigo shades lightening to dove grey in the sea. The design forms a broad band around the top of all the pieces, edged in black, and overlaying the soft celadon green-grey background glaze beneath.

The set consists of a monumental washbowl and jug, a potty, and a vase or toothbrush holder.

I will be listing it soon on ebay, and would be grateful for any help you can offer in terms of identification. I have attached some photos to help.

Many thanks in advance, and best wishes
Sue Ellery (elestegen)

Carlton Ware Curled Lettuce

Hi Bruce,
I can't find any information on this piece of Carlton Ware and I was wondering if you could help me. It was described as Carlton Ware Lettuce Leaf and is a group of six plates, a creamer and saucer. Hopefully you can read the stamp...if not it says REGISTRATION APPLIED FOR
                                                                    Carlton Ware
                                                                    Made in England
                                                                    "Trade Mark"
Impressed stamp 1374

I haven't seen this pattern before and I'd really appreciate it if you could help me with the identification
and an idea on its value.

All the best
Dianne

Carlton Ware Water Lily WWII Production PDF Print E-mail

"Hello Bruce,
I have an all pale yellow plate - in the Water Lily pattern. I believe it dates from the war. It does not, however, bear any Carlton Ware mark .... merely says 'MADE IN ENGLAND' in a blue/green rectangle .... and has the impressed figures 1783/8 (I think that is the number as some are not clear). I am selling this in the near future (have a down-size move pending) - but can I sell it as Carlton Ware without the mark being present? Look forward to hearingfrom you - great site by the way! Many thanks, Barbara"

Carlton Ware Water Lily Plate - WWII production

Barbara has now supplied me with photos of item. I have no doubt that Barbara’s tray is Carlton Ware; it production from during WWII…..

Royal Doulton Tree's In Garden PDF Print E-mail

I received this query by email from Val in the UK

Royal Doulton Tree's In Garden

Hello again from the UK. I find your site is a mine of information and love just browsing the photos. I have attached a couple for you as I am unable to track down any information on this little pot from Royal Doulton. I'm not sure if it is series ware or not. Ref to base D3679 -looks like an Italian view of trees ?

Regards Val
