Underglaze Carlton Ware Chinese Figures Veriation

Image

An unusual Carlton Ware jar base sold  on eBay UK on the 22nd April 2014. This Jar is right out there, it is shape 311, it has the Carlton Ware script mark and the pattern number 3178.

The scene is under glaze hand painted and it appears to be an amalgam of three different patterns.

The central scene is one of the Chinese Figures pattern number 3199 scenes; this is perhaps the least common of the Chinese Figures scenes and generally found on the back of larger items. It also has the Chinese characters that are seen on Chinese Figures.

However the Chinese Figures scene is in a Cartouche very similar to the pattern Mikado in Cartouche which was introduced in 1919. Mikado in Cartouche has three pattern numbers issued against it, 2367, 2368 and 3178, which is the same number that appears on the jar base.

On the back of the Jar is the same devise that appears in conjunction with the variations of the Dragon Pattern. There are several variations of the Dragon pattern.

The variation I call Dragon & Tree (pattern # 3251 & 3295) has this devise on the reverse; where the variation Dragon & cloud (pattern # 3331 & 3332) does not have the devise.
