Close up of W&R Carlton Ware Mikado Bowl - pattern

Over the last few days I have been looking at the various pattern numbers for the Mikado pattern. After the release of the Kosniowski’s latest tome “Carlton Ware, The Complete Guide”; I have decided to review my own work. Now in the “The Complete Guide” 36 numbers have been attributed to the Mikado pattern. Now after reviewing my own files I have come up with a list of 18 patterns; with another colour-way without a number.

I have been informed by Harvey Pettit of “The Cochrane & Pettit Archive of Carlton Ware” that the first pattern 2355 and this dates the release of this pattern to 1919. To date I have never seen a clear pattern number which has a number earlier than this – there have been some, but none that are clear and concise.

The numbers I have are as follows:-

These lists are just so complex – looking at photos and pattern lists and trying to work out which are the misread numbers and which are correct is enough to make one beg for a lobotomy. If you have example of Mikado where the numbers are clear and can be read without trying to work out if a 2 is a 8 or a 5 – please contact us and add your pearls of wisdom. Mistakes must be made and then corrected so a consensus can be reached which will give us the most accurate information – please contact if you can add to this discussion.
