McHugh Pottery Shapes by Shape Number

Shape 36 to 148

Sugar Bowl Shape 36

height to top lid knob 8 cm (3.12")

This sugar bowl is clearly marked 36; this is the first example I have seen of this shape. It looks to be as if the lid and the base came out of the factory as a set. I have had a collector tell me that he had a teapot marked 36. Perhaps 36 was a number issued against a tea set, would love to hear from anybody with any other examples of a 36.

Sugar Bowl with Lid - Shape 37

McHugh Pottery

Dated 1934

There are 3 variations of shape 37 - the first is a large twin handle vase. The second is a tri-handle pot which comes also with a lid. The curator of the "Erin May Collection" tells me that he has seen two examples of shape 37 with a lid. It could be argued that the lid comes from something else and that this shape does not have a lid - I will leave this argument until I have further information.

This is the only example I have seen of a McHugh Teapot marked as a number 52, but it is clearly marked 52. It is a one cup teapot, it was purchased with a creamer and a sugar bowl  (see photo of compleate teaset on McHugh Shapes Other).

Note: There are two examples of pots marked as shape number 54, Ross says the number on the base of his is very clear. Is the mark on the base of one of these a mistake made at  the time of production, I don't know. The Erin May collection has an example of this shape, but it is clearly marked as shape 90. This is an enigma, may be things will come clearer in the future (photo of shape 90 near the bottom of the page).

Small Float Bowl and Frog - shape 55

This is a very sall exampel of a Shape 55 float bowl and from, it is the bowl that is small, the frog is much the same size as the other examples I have seen.

This is a very interesting example, note the ribbed strap handles, this is the only example I have seen of this style of decoration on McHugh pottery. This style of decoration comes up on John Campbell Pottery, but not McHugh.

Vase - Shape 90

Image

 height 25 cm (10") tall

The vase held by the Erin May Collection leaves us with a conundrum, it is clearly marked 90 to the base, but it is the same shape and size as the shape 54 that Ross & Sharron Pentreath provided the details (see photo under shape 54).

Deco Handle Pitcher - 96A

McHugh Shape

8 cm (3.12") tall - diameter of 12.5 cm (5")

This is the only example I have seen of this shape, it appears to be a variation of Shape 18, it is clearly marked to the base as a Shape A.
