Carlton Ware Gypsy Pattern

The Dancer depicted in this pattern is Isadora Duncan who is considered the mother of Modern Dance. Isadora Duncan was born on in California on the 27th May 1877, the daughter of Joseph Charles Duncan (1819 – 1898) and Mary Isadora Gray (1849 – 1922). Isadora Duncan worked in New York before traveling to England where she studied the images on vases and bas-reliefs held by the British Museum.

She incorporated these classic stances in a flowing style which she performed bare foot in a Grecian tunic. Isadora Duncan was killed in a freak accident at the age of 50. On the 14th September 1927, while riding in an open sports car through the streets of Niece, her long silk scarf became tangled in the spokes of the cars rare wheel and her neck was broken.
