 Carlton Ware Awakening Pattern 3450

I have added the above image for no better reason than I like it. It is the Awakening motif from the inside of a Cigarette box marked 3450. This is not a mother of peral colourway.

The Carlton Ware Awakening Coffee pot is from a Melon coffee set which leaves us with a conundrum. This Coffee Pot along with a Creamer and Sugar bowl are all clearly marked with a Carlton Ware script maker’s mark, but the 6 Cups and Saucers which make up the set are all marked with a W&R mark. So what is it, a W&R pattern, or a Carlton Ware pattern? I have discussed this at length with the Nicholnack advisory panel, and we have concluded that it is a Carlton Ware pattern. The pattern number 3450 which is on the base of all the pieces was introduced circa 1930. A full three years after the W&R mark was supposedly discontinued. No other pattern we know of on this colour-way pattern number predates 3450. On a similar ground from the same period we have Jaggered Bouquet - pattern 3489 and Garden - pattern 3476. As both of the pattern numbers are close to that of the Awakening pattern 3450, we conclude that they are of the same 1930 era.

After much thought I have come up with a hypothesis of how the Awakening Coffee Cups & Saucers where produced with a W&R makers mark at least 3 years after the mark was discontinued. This Awakening Coffee set is the only example that any of the members of Nicholnack panel know of. Perhaps this set was produced as a trial or even a one off for a special occasion, perhaps a wedding present or a retiring present for a staff member, agent or even distributor. Tucked away in the back of the glost warehouse was a set of cups & saucers and these where used. Perhaps to make the set even more special, or perhaps just as part of an economy drive, after all 1930 was the one of bleak years of the depression. I guess we will never know for sure why “The Awakening Coffee Set” is marked as it is, but it is fun to speculate.
